Karman Kaur Thandi becomes India's no 1
With her new ranking as India's no 1 in women's tennis, Thandi has now replaced Ankita Raina who held the position strongly since 2013. She beat Canada's Katherine Sebov 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final round of the $60,000 ITF women's tennis tournament. Her victory has now pushed her to stand at 217th position moving past Ankita Raina who stands at 297th position. Her win becomes even more impressive because of her resilience throughout the tournament. She beat USA's Robin Anderson (second-seeded in the tournament) in the first round, following up with a win against Japan's Ena Shibahara.
Thandi had grabbed the W25 tournament trophy back in June at Gurugram and the Saguenay win makes it her second singles title this year, and third overall.
Thandi won her first singles title in Hongkong in 2018. In September this year, she earned massive attention and praise after she bet France's Chloe Paquet in the opening round at WTA Chennai Open 2022. She performed outstandingly well in the second round playing at par with former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard.
This year has been great for Thandi, considering she had ranked outside of the top 400 in February. The New-Delhi-based player managed to turn around things in her favour by winning back-to-back games this year. Thandi, who held the 196 ranking in 2018 at WTA, had slipped down in the following years. With her current form and wins lately and her ranking at 217th position, she is working towards furthering her sporting career with a new vision.
