Kangana Ranaut Appears Before Court. The Panga actor appeared before Andheri court in Mumbai today regarding the defamation case filed by lyricist Javed Akhtar against her.
This was the first time that the actor was present for a hearing. The case has been adjourned till November 15. Ranaut's lawyer has filed a transfer application which will be heard on October 1. Ranaut came to the hearing with an enhanced CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) security entourage.
She has filed a counter-complaint against the famous lyricist Akhtar alleging extortion and invasion of privacy. She has accused the senior member of the Bollywood industry of threatening her. She also said she did not trust the judge at the Metropolitan Magistrate's court in Andheri.
The Andheri magistrate court had warned actor Ranaut that it will serve her with an arrest warrant for non-appearance. Ranaut had not attended a single hearing of the case so far. Akhtar, however, has been present for all of them.
During the September 14 hearing of the defamation case, Ranaut’s lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui submitted a health certificate, telling the court that the actor has not been keeping well. “She has been travelling a lot to promote her film and has been meeting a lot of people. So she has probably contracted Covid due to that,” said Siddiqui, adding that Ranaut will soon undergo testing for COVID-19.
The defamation case goes back to a year. Lyricist Javed Akhtar had filed a criminal defamation case against Ranaut for her remarks against him during interviews after Sushant Singh Rajput. Akhtar alleged that the actor had made baseless allegations against him during multiple interviews that had caused damage to his reputation.
In December, the metropolitan magistrate court had directed Mumbai police to begin an investigation into the case.
