On Monday, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will resign from her Senate seat, two days before the Inauguration Day. California Governor Gavin Newsom selected Alex Padilla, now California’s secretary of state, as Harris‘ replacement in the US Senate. He will serve the final two years of her term. "I am humbled and honored to serve as California’s next United States Senator," Padilla had earlier said on Twitter.
56-year-old Harris will become the first woman to be sworn in as Vice President of the US, come January 20. Additionally, she is also the first Black woman and first woman of South Asian descent (who traces her origin to Tamil Nadu) to serve in the said post. She was the second Black woman US senator, winning the election from California 17 years after Democrat Carol Moseley Braun.
"While I may be the first woman in this office, I won't be the last," Harris had said in her speech on November 7 after being elected.
