She Resented My Stardom In Italy: Kabir Bedi On Parveen Babi

Kabir Bedi and Parveen Babi's relationship was one of the most talked about in the B-Town. The actor was in an open marriage with Protima Bedi when he was dating the female superstar but their relationship became complicated because of Babi's mental health.

Though Kabir Bedi was not a big star in India as compared to Parveen Babi, he was a known face in Europe. Parveen Babi was a celebrated star in India and had given hits like Amar, Akbar, Anthony and Zanjeer but Kabir Bedi never had that stardom in India. However, his Italian pirate drama series Sandokan was a great hit in Europe that made him a big star there. Kabir Bedi in a recent interview reportedly said that though he did not have any discomfort with Babi's fame in India, Babi felt insecure about his stardom whenever they visited Italy.

Kabir Bedi Parveen Babi Complicated Relationship

Kabir Bedi talked about his relationship with Babi and said, "Relationships between stars are difficult. Every star has so much pressure on their time. There are shoots, functions, press demands, and social obligations. And two stars’ schedules clashing leads to tensions. You have to sacrifice a lot. But we never had any problem when we were in India because I knew Parveen is a bigger star than me. I was coming up. It didn’t bother me because I was convinced I was going to be a big star also".

He further added, "But when we came to Italy and people started sidelining Parveen, I could see the resentment in her towards my stardom. She wasn’t used to being second fiddle to me. Suddenly, I was the star and she was not. This also upset her. Add to the fact that her mental condition was slowly deteriorating"

Kabir Bedi and Parveen Babi started dating in the early 1970s when he was still married to Protima Bedi. Their relationship was a rocky one and Bedi's fling made it worse also due to work commitments and Babi's mental health. They broke up in 1977. Parveen Babi was later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and she died in 2005.
