A trained dog squad in Assam, popular for being one of its kind, is doing just that. With its first unit member as Zorba, the squad has been helping track poachers in national parks and sanctuaries for conservation efforts. With Zorba as the senior and most experienced member, the squad has helped solve several wildlife crimes. Zorba, who was battling illness owing to old age, passed away leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered and a professional working record in wildlife conservation that will be honoured forever.
Zorba, the Belgian Malinois dog who was the first unit member of Aaranayak - the biodiversity conversation organisation in Assam, passed away due to old age. Zorba was actively involved in several anti-poaching operations in his eight-year-old career as a K9 member.

K9 Member Zorba Passes Away: Know All About Her
Under the initiative of the Aaranyak - a biodiversity organisation, the country’s first dog squad for wildlife crimes was set up in 2011. A Belgian Malinois named Zorba made the significance as its first member. The squad also called the K9 unit evolved into an efficient and super-trained one and had seven dog members on board over the past decade with Zorba as their most experienced member.
Zorba through the course of his duty assisted officials in the first with crucial clues about the rhino poachers' exit routes and helped in arrests of the culprits in several different cases. Zorba’s breed is super effective when it comes to taking charge of protection. The European and American forces have successfully employed the Belgian Malinois breed for a lot of their operations.
Zorba holds a valiant portfolio to his name as he helped nab over 60 poachers in Assam, with 50 poachers from the Kaziranga National Park itself. The park which is globally famous for its one-horned rhinos was protected for the longest time due to the service of canines like Zorba. He retired in 2019 and was honoured for his service to the country and the protection of wildlife.
The K9 squad member who had been turning old off lately was enjoying a retired life at the K9 camp to receive better healthcare without the pressure of severe duties. According to reports, the brave dog passed away last night owing to prolonged illness.
