Trigger Warning: This article contains graphic details.
Delhi Police said that the information gathered from the deceased’s mother led to several clues pointing at the main accused, the Old Nangal crematorium priest and four men. The 55-year-old priest, identified as Radhey Shyam, and his accomplices, known to the girl’s mother, called her to the crematorium, where they lived in a rented house, and showed her daughter’s body claiming that the girl died of electrocution and asked them not to inform the police. They also suggested that getting the cops involved in the matter would only complicate the matter, hence a cremation should be held immediately, PTI reported.
Reports suggest that the accused also allegedly manipulated the deceased’s mother into avoiding autopsy, saying that doctors will steal the girl’s organs, so it was better to cremate her instead. Police said that the family has also expressed suspicions that the girl could have been sexually assaulted and then murdered, given how her body was cremated in a hurry. More here.
Subsequently, four men were booked for murder, rape and criminal intimidation, a case regarding which was registered under Indian Penal Code’s sections 302, 376 and 506. Relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the SC/ST Act have also been added to the FIR.
As per the cops investigating the case, nearly 200 villagers reached the crematorium on Sunday night and carried out a protest till Monday evening, demanding that the arrested persons be booked on rape and murder charges. “We want the strictest punishment for the priest and the three men. We suspect that this is a case of murder after rape,” said a 45-year-old neighbour of the girl’s family. On Twitter too, people, outraged by the entire incident, started showing concern about Delhi turning into another Hathras and soon #JusticeForDelhiCanttGirl began trending with widespread criticism for the alleged gruesome act. Twitter referred to the hurried cremation of a Dalit woman by Delhi police last year, who was allegedly gangraped and murdered in UP’s Hathras.
A nine-year-old girl who went to get water inside the crematorium of Delhi Cantt was burnt alive, one user claimed on social media. "Still no investigation has been done," she further wrote, demanding justice for the innocent girl. Many urged "give justice to the daughter of Delhi", while some demanded immediate execution of the accused involved in the case.
"A 9 Yr old! Like Really?? Where Is Humanity? This Is Beyond Pathetic! How Could Somebody See Innocent Kids In that Way (sic)," a third wrote in disgust. One person wrote, "We want justice for everyone...Every innocent whether she is victim of rape or he is victim of rampant fake rape case (sic)." Another said, "When we fail as a society meant to be safe for woman, children and in general People (sic)."
