A jilted lover burnt alive a techie outside her house in Chennai on Monday (Nov 13). The accused, a science graduate, had reportedly been harassing the young engineer for some time. The girl has been identified as S Induja.
The Chennai police have arrested the lover who claims that the two were in a relationship and had plans to marry. But the girl's family, living in Adambakkam area, says otherwise. They told police that the man was harassing Induja for quite some time now and that she had rebuffed him.
On Monday night, around 8.45 pm, the accused went to Induja’s house. He forced the family to let him speak to her. But they refused to let him enter the house. The police said that he threw petrol on Induja and then set her ablaze with a lighter. Her mother and sister, who tried to save her, also got injured. The mother suffered 49% burns while the sister is in ICU. Her father wasn’t home when the incident took place.

Their neighbours heard the women's cries and rushed them to the hospital. They said the ambulance reached the crime scene 40 minutes later.

Last year in June, an Infosys techie, S Swathi, was stabbed to death at a Chennai railway station by an unidentified man. In another case in 2014, a TCS techie was also killed in a similar manner.
Such cases of jilted lovers killing women or attacking them with acid has to stop. People should understand the meaning of consent. Women aren’t objects that they can own. Any relationship begins and ends with the will of individuals and people must respect that. Instead of security programmes for women, government and policy-makers should focus on ways to sensitize men towards understanding the concept of consent.
