Jharkhand Woman Gangraped By 17 Men, NCW Asks For Completion Of Probe Within Two Months: Report

One accused in the case has been arrested so far, while the survivor has been sent for medical examination.

A mother of five children was allegedly gangraped by 17 men in Jharkhand's Dumka district while her husband was held captive on Tuesday night. Taking suo motu cognisance of the Jharkhand rape case, National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday asked the state police to complete their probe within two months.

According to a report by NDTV, the couple was returning home from a weekly village market on Tuesday night when the incident happened. One of the accused was detained after a complaint was registered by the 35-year-old survivor on Wednesday at  Mufassil police station.

On the proceedings of the case, DIG Sudarshan Mandal said, "As per the statement of the woman, she was returning with her husband from a village market on Tuesday night when 17 people intercepted her and took her husband hostage before committing the crime." He also added that the woman has been sent for a medical examination, reported Hindustan Times.

According to DIG Mandal, the woman could identify only one person and the police have detained the accused for interrogation. The woman also told the police that the accused were drunk.

NCW On Jharkhand Rape Case

A statement released by the National Commission for Women said that NCW is seriously concerned about the Jharkhand rape case incident and has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter. "Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to Director General of Police, Jarkhand seeking adherence to guidelines of Ministry of Home Affairs of completing probes in two months in cases of sexual assault."
