Former Union environment minister Jayanthi Natrajan has spoken up about an alleged unfair practice in the Congress government. In letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Natrajan claimed that in effort to push for big ticket projects, which she had rejected as they were against norms; Rahul Gandhi removed her from her post.
In the letter, she has accused Gandhi of asking her to not give legal permission for certain projects and portraying her in a bad light in front of the media. According to Indian Today, Headlines Today had access to the letter which said: " …on December 20, 2013, the then PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh summoned me to his office… He said ‘Jayanthi, I have been told by Congress President, that your services are required for party work.’
She continued: “I was puzzled, and I said, ‘Yes Sir. So what should I do?’ He replied, ‘She wants you to resign.’ I was shocked and said, ‘Resign Sir? But when?’ He replied ‘Today.’ I once again asked him if this was what the Congress president wished. He answered in the affirmative. Unsuspecting, and trusting you totally, I did not utter a single word, but smiled at him and said I would comply with the wishes of the Congress President.”
This letter has been released right after Rahul Gandhi’s first rally in Delhi and would cause some serious damage to the party.
A lawyer and a politician, Natrajan has been thrice elected as Member of Parliament representing the state of Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha. Although she joined Congress in 1980s, in the 90’s when she and other members were unhappy with Narsimha Rao’s government, they formed another party. She later joined the Congress and was appointed the Environment Minister in 2011.
