Actor and political activist Jane Fonda will be honoured at the Golden Globes this year for her illustrious career with its highest honour. The 83-year-old will receive the Cecil B DeMille Award during the 78th annual awards ceremony, that will be held on February 28.
Fonda, the daughter of Oscar winner Henry Fonda and sister of late actor Peter Fonda, has a six-decade-long acting career which includes classics like Coming Home, Julia, The China Syndrome, Klute, along with roles in iconic movies such as 9 to 5. More recently, she has appeared in the Netflix series Grace & Frankie as well as Book Club and Youth. Fonda has also written a book titled What Can I Do? My Path from Climate Despair to Action which was released last year.
The veteran movie and television star will receive this lifetime achievement award for her decorated career and her “unrelenting activism,” the Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Ali Sar said in a statement.
As an activist, Jane Fonda is known for protesting against the Vietnam War, campaigning for civil rights, and advocating for feminist causes. Currently, she is leading Fire Drill Fridays to raise awareness about the climate crisis and has been arrested multiple times during the protests. “Her undeniable talent has gained her the highest level of recognition,” Sar said, adding, "While her professional life has taken many turns, her unwavering commitment to evoking change has remained.”
“I had no idea that this was going to happen,” Jane Fonda told The Times last February, about her environmental crusade. “It was an instinct. I may be famous and white and privileged, but when I feel a need for something, I find there’s usually a whole lot of people who feel the same need. ... With Fire Drill Fridays, the rallies, the civil disobedience, the risking arrest appealed to a whole lot of people.”
Jane Fonda's other memorable performances as an actor include The Electric Horseman and Barefoot in the Park. She is a seven-time Golden Globe winner and 15-time nominee. She has won two Oscars, an Emmy, Honorary Golden Lion, AFI Life Achievement Award, and National Board of Review Career Achievement Award among others.
