The founder of Hakhoo Street Animals Foundation Trust was able to rescue and rehabilitate over 368 street animals. While speaking to the news agency ANI, she said that being a migrant, she understands the pain of homeless animals. Her shelter is filled with stray cats, pigs, dogs, monkeys, birds, calves among many others.

In October this year, the Jammu administration awarded her a certificate of 'Appreciation in recognition of significant and outstanding contribution in the field of Animal welfare'. In the interview, the woman shared that whenever she sees an injured or abandoned animal, she brings it home.

Hakhoo shared that her shelter has been providing food, medicines, fees of surgeries and other treatments for the street animals through their savings. She said, "There is no help from outside. We sold my mother's wedding jewellery and might have to sell the house as well to run the rehabilitation centre."

As an animal lover, she believes that there should be strict rules with regard to their safety. She said, "Rule should be so strict that people think 1 lakh times before abandoning their pet." Speaking further on the safety concerns, she pointed out that street animals in Jammu have been subjected to brutal attacks in the recent past. She said that people beat up dogs put hot water and even acid on them. She said that dogs being community animals deserve equal rights too.

" It is crucial for the government to make proper laws concerning this issue," Hakhoo added. According to reports, her mother Urmila Hakhoo started the humanitarian work before her. She has been rescuing and feeding dogs since 1993. Urmila requested, "I just request people that they support my daughter in her endeavour to rescue animals and do not abandon their own pets and leave them on the streets".
