Ex-Congress Councillor Ishrat Jahan Granted Bail In UAPA Case

On Monday, former Congress Councillor Ishrat Jahan was granted bail application in FIR 59/2020, which claims a bigger conspiracy in the Delhi riots, by a Delhi court.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, who had reserved his judgement after hearing the petitions last month, granted Ishrat Jahan bailOn February 26, 2020, she was detained by the Delhi Police Special Cell under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for her alleged involvement in the Northeast Delhi riots of 2020, in which 53 people were killed and over 700 were injured.

She was also accused in another instance of inciting a mob at an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) protest site in Northeast Delhi's Khureiji Khas neighbourhood, according to reports. She was given bail in this case also.

Pradeep Teotia, her lawyer, claimed there were no current cases against her, allowing her to be released from judicial custody. During her bail hearing, Teotia said that the police portrayed her as a hardliner, despite the fact that she won the elections because of her secular credentials.

At the last hearing, Advocate Pradeep Teotia represented Ishrat Jahan, while Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad represented the government.

Ishrat Jahan Granted Bail

According to several reports, she was a member of the All India Congress Committee and a Congress councillor under the INC ticket in 2012, she continued from 2012 to 2017. After her detention in February 2020, she was also given temporary bail for ten days in order to marry in June 2020. She then married Farhan Hashmi.

She alleged that she was harassed by inmates in at least two incidents in November and December 2020. She also complained of being abused on a regular basis. Jahan was in "utter fear," according to a district court judge, who ordered jail officials to provide her with security. She was held at Mandoli prison until March 2022.

So far, the Delhi High Court has granted bail to five people in the UAPA case. They are Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita, Jamia Asif Iqbal Tanha, Safoora Zargar, and Faizan Khan. In addition, Sharjeel Imam and Saleem Khan's bail hearings have been postponed until March 22.
