Time Magazine said that the “Heroes of 2022” are the women of Iran for their ongoing movement and commitment to the protests that sparked after Mahsa Amini’s death.
The Iranian women are fighting for their right to live with dignity and are protesting against atrocities. Men and children joined the protests in solidarity.
Iranian Woman Named Heros Of The Year
Iranian women are protesting the horrors and defending their right to a dignified existence.
A sizable portion of Iran's populace finds the killing of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman, while she was in police custody intolerable. The men have also joined the demonstrations to support their female counterparts and, most recently, to celebrate the Iranian football team's victory over the United States. Children also joined the nationwide protests and risked their lives for freedom, despite the Iranian government's violent crackdown on the protests.
Additionally, Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, has been named Time's Person of the Year 2022. The publication also explained why Iranian women were chosen as the year 2022's heroes. Azadeh Moaveni, an Iranian-American journalist, authored the piece praising their movement.
According to Moaveni, "the movement they're leading is educated, liberal, secular, raised with greater aspirations, and anxious for normality: education and international travel, respect for the law, access to the Apple Store, a significant involvement in politics, the freedom to say and wear whatever."
Iran's demonstrations started in September after Mahsa Amini passed away while being detained by the police for wearing her headscarf incorrectly. According to human rights organisations, her death provoked major riots and protests throughout Iran as well as a violent government crackdown that resulted in at least 400 deaths and thousands more arrests.
Iranian women have been seen in numerous social media videos removing their hijabs and burning them in protest. The rallying cry of the protesters has been the slogan "Women, life, freedom".
In celebration, a lot of Iranians posted the Time cover image on social media.
