The hijab dress code for women in Iran is strict and women are subjected to imprisonment and fines for violating it. The anti-hijab protests and demonstrations in Iran began in September 2022 when a 22 years old girl named Mahsa Amini was arrested by morality police for violating hijab rules and allegedly died due to police cruelty. Since then Iranian administration has arrested many protesters and subjected them to violence and among them is popular Iranian actor Taraneh Alidoosti whose release is being demanded by artists around the world including Mark Ruffalo.

  1. Taraneh Alidoosti is a 38-years old award-winning actor from Tehran, Iran who has starred in Iranian as well as Hollywood films like About Elly, Doubt, Fireworks Wednesday and Subtraction.
  2. She debuted at the age of 17 years with the film I'm Taraneh, 15 which won her Best Actress awards at the 2002 Locarno International Film Festival and 20th Fajr Film Festival. The actor has since received many awards and is one of the leading actors in Iran.
  3. She played the lead role of Rana in the movie The Salesman released in 2016 and was the winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the Oscars 2016.
  4. Alidoosti has often raised her voice against social issues in 2017, she boycotted 89th Academy Awards, the same year her film The Salesman was nominated for Oscar, as a way of protesting against the Trump government's upcoming visa restrictions on Iranians.
  5. On December 17, 2022, Taraneh Alidoosti made a social media post criticising the hanging of anti-hijab protester Mohsen Shikari which was the first known execution linked to the protest. She was later arrested for her act and sentenced to five months imprisonment.
  6. In her Instagram post, she wrote, "Your silence means the support of the oppression and the oppressor. His name was Mohsen Shekari. Every international organization who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action, is a disgrace to humanity". Her Instagram account was deleted after that.
  7. Iranian administration claimed that her arrest was because of the lack of evidence to support her claims. In November, Alidoosti also shared a picture of herself not wearing hijab and holding a banner that read, "Women, Life, Freedom".
  8. Many people have come out in support of the actor including actors like Avengers actor Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Lily James, Kristen Stewart, Kate Winslet, Jason Momoa, Emma Thompson and Mira Nair as they all signed a petition demanding the release of the Iranian actor.
