Iran Executes Three Men For Allegedly Raping Women

On 4 July, Tuesday, Iran executed three men convicted of drugging and raping women. The convicts lured women to a fake cosmetic surgery clinic and injected them with anaesthetic drugs. Reportedly, the three men were guilty in 12 cases of sexual assault in late 2021, as the judiciary's Mizan Online website reported. 

Hormozgan's Chief Justice Mojtaba Ghahramani was quoted saying, "The three men who raped several women in an unauthorised beauty salon were hanged in Bandar Abbas prison this morning."

Iran Executes Three Men For Rape 

One among the three men was a medical assistant who lured seven victims to the fake clinic by posting false advertisements of cosmetic procedures online. When they went to the clinic, they were injected with an anaesthetic drug and raped. The other two were nurses, both were charged with five cases of rape and for the theft of drugs, as reported. 

In Iran, rape (zina-be-onf) is punishable by death by hanging. The convictions are made either by confession or the judge's knowledge rather than witnesses. The Islamic penal code in Iran also states rape carries the death penalty in Islamic law. Rape through deception is categorized as a sexual offence and rape through force or threat is considered rape that carries the death penalty. However, as the report suggests, in this case, the men appealed multiple times and every time the relevant branch of the Supreme Court confirmed their conviction. 

The seven people, including three convicts executed on rape charges so far this year, as per the statement of Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) group. Last year at least 23 people were executed for rape compared to 10 in 2021 and 12 in 2020. Iran's death penalty is higher than any nation except China. Iran hanged at least 582 people last year, as per the rights group Amnesty International. The 354 executions made so far in 2023 in Iran.
