Police Inspector Arrested For Raping 13-Year-Old Tribal Girl In Odisha

Inspector Anand Kumar Majhi from Odisha’s Sundargarh district, who allegedly raped a 13-year-old tribal girl over a period of two months and got her pregnancy terminated, has been arrested.

The accused, 55, served in Biramitrapur police station and was suspended last week after initial investigations revealed that he had allegedly raped the minor in a room of police station in March this year. Police officers say that he also forced her to abort at a clinic, when the girl got pregnant, a report by Hindustan Times revealed.

Survivor of repeated sexual assault, the teenage girl had reportedly come to Biramitrapur area to visit a fair on March 25 but the event was cancelled due the lockdown. The girl was waiting to return home near a bus stand when a police patrol team picked her up and took her to the police station where Majhi allegedly raped her. They released her the next morning, the complaint said.

News reports suggest that the girl was repeatedly called to the police station where other policemen, including the inspector, raped her. When she was discovered pregnant Majhi took her to a clinic and forced her to have an abortion. The police officers now confirmed that the girl is admitted to a child shelter home in Bisra area of Sundargarh district.

The inspector was arrested from a forest in Angul district by a special CID team, after being on the run for a week, reported HT.

When the girl was seen crying outside the police station last week, she was rescued by a local NGO. After learning about the crime, S Jena, the district child protection officer of Sundargarh, lodged a complaint with Raiboga police against Majhi, another police personnel, the doctor who conducted the abortion at a community health centre, the stepfather of the girl and two others.

On Wednesday, Kavita Jalan, the deputy inspector general of police (Western Range) said that Majhi was suspended a day after a case was lodged against him along with five other people involved in the crime. "His conduct was shameful. Our apologies to the young girl," said the Director General of Police Abhay apologising to the minor. On Tuesday he also ordered the Crime Branch to take charge of the investigation from Raiboga police.
