After the first female president of Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh Darvesh Yadav was shot dead in broad daylight by her colleague, advocate Indu Kaul has filed a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking CBI inquiry into the case. The matter has been called for urgent hearing and the Vacation Bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant agreed to hear it on Tuesday, June 25.
Apart from a CBI probe into the case, Kaul has also sought directions to provide security for women advocates in court and for the provision of all amenities to women even beyond court hours. The petition also urges the court to order the Bar Council of India to set up a social security scheme for women advocates, among other prayers.
"The way Darvesh Yadav was murdered in broad daylight and shoots her after yelling ‘Tu jeet gyi’ (you won) shows that the male ego was hurt.”
Kaul spoke to SheThePeople.TV about the petition and the necessity of security system for women advocates and said, “We want security for women advocates after court hours, in court premises, chambers, car parking areas, etc. Our day starts from 4.p.m. onwards so we want security. The way Darvesh Yadav was murdered in broad daylight and shoots her after yelling ‘Tu jeet gyi’ (you won) shows that the male ego was hurt.”
“If such things happen, we also question the social security of women because suppose if she would have survived then she wouldn’t have been able to come back to the profession. She was a single woman, she wasn’t dependent on anybody and if she had survived the gunning and was left handicapped then would she be able to continue the profession?
If somebody gets raped or sexually harassed then where should the woman go? For the new generation now becoming a lawyer entails a five years course. Most of the parents prefer law as a noble profession and with these types of cases happening in this profession as well as much as women are harassed in every other profession; it will only suppress women entering the legal profession. Then in this profession, if somebody reaches the level of Darvesh and breaks the glass ceiling for women, it hurts the male ego and then the woman becomes prey to such incidents,” she added.

The 38-year-old Darvesh was shot dead in Agra Civil Court on Wednesday by a colleague identified as Advocate Manish Sharma who allegedly opened fire around 2:30 pm, when she was in senior lawyer Arvind Mishra’s chamber, attending her felicitation program. Mishra allegedly shot her three times and then proceeded to shoot himself. They both were rushed to the Pushpanjali hospital. The doctors declared Darvesh Yadav dead, while the lawyer’s condition is critical.
“My aunt Darvesh Singh Yadav was sitting at advocate Arvind Kumar Mishra’s chamber when accused Manish Sharma came with his pistol and fired shots at her and another relative Manoj Kumar. While Kumar escaped the bullet, Darvesh suffered three hits. Later, Manish shot himself with the same weapon,” Darvesh’s Nephew wrote in the FIR.
