Dr. Mariam Afifa Ansari India's First Female Muslim Neurosurgeon

Dr Mariam Afifa Ansari from Malegao has become India's first female neurosurgeon from the Muslim community as announced by MSO Maharashtra state president.

Mariam Afifa Ansari shifted to Hyderabad during high school and completed her MBBS from the city. She qualified the Super Specialty Courses exam of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, also called NEET SS, in 2020 with 137th rank.

Mariam Afifa Ansari completed her primary studies from Maharashtra's Malegao from Urdu medium school. In class 10th, she shifted to Hyderabad where she went to study for her class 10th in Rajkumari Durushevar Girls High School. Ansari was a top performer since her primary school days and even won gold medal in class 10th. She completed her MBBS in 2017 from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad and won five gold medals during her course. She continued her success feat until she accomplished her dream of becoming a neurosurgeon.

After her MBBS, she applied for Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (MRCS) degree and completed her postgraduate diploma from England in 2019. She went to do Diploma of National Board in 2020 which is a special postgraduate degree in India that is awarded to specialist doctors. In the same year, Ansari applied for NEET SS exam and secured 137th rank after which she was admitted to Master Chirurgiae (MCh) at the Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad for free.

Talking about her success, Mariam Afifa Ansari has reportedly said, "Now I have become Dr. Afifa from Miss Afifa and my dream of wearing a white coat and examining patients with a stethoscope came true."

She further said, "My success is a gift from Allah and now a responsibility". As an advice to Muslim girls like her who aspire to achieve mighty goals that may seem impossible, she said, "Don’t give up, never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it, prove them wrong, by getting it."

Mariam Afifa Ansari is also good at Islamic teaching, calligraphy and painting. Her mother who raised her as a single parent works as a teacher and is immensely proud of her daughter who worked hard and crossed every hurdle to become an inspiration for the generations to come.
