Indian wrestler, Vinesh Phogat, advanced into the 53 kg final round of the Poland Open, on Friday.
Vinesh Phogat had to battle against Ekaterina Poleshchuk, a 2019 World bronze winner, in her opening bout. In the second round, she needed just 75 seconds, to pin her American opponent, Amy Ann Fearnside.
The wrestler Phogat will now be able to win her third gold medal for this season. She had previously won titles in Matteo Pellicone and Asian Championship, in the months of March and April, respectively.
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat had a tough start
Phogat had a tough start in the opening bout against Poleshchuk. She then went for a left leg attack, but her Russian opponent was too strong for her, and took her down on the counter for a 2-0 lead. The Russian managed to remain in the lead throughout the first period.
A few moments before the break, Phogat initiated another move, but was unable to complete it.
Then in the start of the second period, Vinesh was able to go ahead of her Russian opponent, by initiating a double leg attack. She was then able to secure two more points, when Poleshchuk committed a technical violation, and was cautioned for the same.
Then in the second round, Vinesh Phogat was able to easily win against her American opponent, and was six points ahead of her.
Anshu Malik withdrew from the Poland Open
Olympic-bound wrestler Anshu Malik withdrew from the Poland Open, after she caught a fever. She is now being tested for COVID-19. A source close to her said that Malik was perfectly fine when she arrived at Warsaw, and that her fever didn't look like COVID-19.
Another wrestler named Deepak Punia, had to withdraw from the 86 kg freestyle competition, after he got an elbow injury.
