Study Claims Indian Women Lead In Asking Salary Hikes Unlike West Countries

Working women in India have exceeded working women in the world's largest economies, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, in terms of demanding frequent salary increases.

Working women in India have exceeded working women in the world's largest economies, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, in terms of demanding frequent salary hikes. Furthermore, Indian women are more happy with their employers' efforts to close the gender gap than women in any other economy in the world. This increase comes at a time when the world's largest economies are experiencing economic decline.

According to a 2024 survey conducted by job listing site Indeed, 65 percent of Indian women have previously requested a salary increase. This number is higher than any other country in the world.

Following India, the United States has 51 percent of women seeking salary increases. In France and Germany, 50% of female professionals reported seeking salary hikes. While Canada and the United Kingdom were at 47 and 45 percent, respectively.In contrast, women professionals in Japan and Singapore were the least likely to request compensation increases. In Japan, only 13% of women requested a salary hike. In Singapore, 32% of women did so.

Indian working women more optimistic towards their career

Furthermore, Indian women professionals reported greater satisfaction with their employers' attempts to close the gender gap in the workplace.90% of women in India believe that pay is the most essential component of their employment. This topped the global average of 82 percent across 11 countries worldwide.

According to Nishita Lalvani, marketing director of Indeed in India and Southeast Asia, "Female respondents in India were consistently more optimistic than their global counterparts."

Remarkably, India is reporting demand for salary hikes when its economy is in such poor condition. The condition and the outrage over layoffs and unemployment have taken over India, resulting in widespread disappointment among job seekers, particularly following the COVID-19 lockdown. According to ANI, India's technological sector laid off over 36,000 people over the last two years as of December.

Leading tech universities experience low placement rates due to critical circumstances. The placements that occurred were not as successful as anticipated. In March, BITS Pilani reached out to its alumni network to help with college placements.

Leading economies around the world, including Japan and the United Kingdom, have also entered a recession.
