Indian Women’s Cricket Team Skips Pak Matches, Loses 6 Points

Looks like the current state of relations between India and Pakistan is likely to destroy India’s chances in many areas, including sports. According to a press statement by the technical committee of the ICC on Wednesday, apparently the Indian women’s team was absent for all their three matches against Pakistan in the ICC women’s championship competition. This resulted in India losing all 6 points for not playing the bilateral series with Pakistan between August 1 and October 31 as per agreement.

When the International Cricket Council asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), they did not have any proper reasons for not participating in the series.

"ICC is well aware that in the prevailing situation, where Indian soldiers are being martyred, the sentiment is dead against playing Pakistan. The chairman is well aware that we need government permission," a furious senior BCCI official told PTI on Wednesday. “This is a move with ulterior motive, trying to play into the hands of Pakistan. They would say if women can play, so can men. But that won’t happen. If ICC does not backtrack, the men’s team -- in solidarity with our women’s team -- won’t play in Champions Trophy,” he added.

As a result of the matches not being played, the ICC rewarded Pakistan with two points for each of the three games and India currently stands at 0. Now, India will play a qualifier in Sri Lanka to make it to the World Cup in England next summer.

The ICC Women’s Championship decides the teams that will play in the ICC Women’s World Cup in England from June 26, 2017, to July 23, 2017. Of the top eight teams, the top four get the chance to qualify directly for the World Cup. This year, the teams that have automatically qualified are Australia, England, New Zealand and the West Indies. The rest go to the 10-team Women’s World Cup Qualifier, to be played in Sri Lanka from February 7-21, 2017.

There have been a number of issues between ICC and BCCI since Shashank Manohar became the independent chairman. "This is a move with ulterior motive trying to play into the hands of Pakistan. As the current situation tells us, most likely, there are possibilities that the men’s team might not participate in the Champions Trophy as a sign of protest against the women cricketers being targeted in the name of rules and regulations.
