Indian women on Twitter: Twitter India commission independent research ahead of International Women's Day in which they found out about what and Indian women are posting on Twitter.
The research findings were based on a quantitative survey including 700 women on Twitter. About 5,22,992 tweets posted by Indian women across 10 Indian cities, between January 2019 to February 2021, were analysed. Manish Maheshwari, the Managing Director of Twitter India said that the objective behind commissioning the research was to find build their understanding of women on Twitter and that they were "inspired by the results".
He added, "There communities and conversations highlight the uniqueness and diversity of the service. Access to a free and open internet has made it possible for everyone to express themselves freely without barriers. As service our goal is to build on this foundation, giving people new ways to converse, form communities and control who can interact with them in a conversation."
What were the findings of the research?
Building Communities
There were nine most prevalent topics that women in India talked about. It is interesting to note that most women engaged in female communities about gaming, entrepreneurship and other fields of interest. About 41 per cent of Indian women used Twitter to seek advice, tips and recommendations. 11.7 women used Twitter to make virtual communities using hashtags such as #WomenInScience, #WomenInTech, #WomenInMarketing, and #GirlGamers. While 37 per cent gave tips, recommendations and tips on such topics. The report added that 31 per cent of women made real-life friends on female Twitter communities.
Social Change
8.7 per cent of women tweeted about online movements such as #TimesUp, #SheforShe and women from Bangaluru, Guwahati and Delhi lead the conversations.
Current Affairs
As it has been proved in previous researches, people on Twitter look for news and current affairs around the world. This new research also proved it right. The report said that 20.8 of Indian women used Twitter to follow up on news and current affairs.
Shared Challenges
Everything from parenting, working from home and issues faces by women in India were discussed on Twitter as more and more women found significant outcomes from online conversations. 6.9 per cent of women talked about everyday challenges. Some shared their experience of being single mothers, home, kids and other topics. They also shared their artworks, talked about modern dating, culinary discoveries. #SareeTwitter was one of the most shared hashtags.
Celebratory moments
Women from Chennai, Madurai and Kolkata shared their professional and personal good news. 14.5 per cent of women loved sharing their individual victories on Twitter as they used hashtags #SmallWins, #WomenWhoWin, #EverydayJoys and #TheMomentOfLift.
Other topics explored the most were fashion (30 per cent), books( 28 per cent), beauty and music. Lastly, the research also found out that Indian women love K-pop.
