Indian Women Clinch Five Medals In International Taekwondo Championship

The Indian women’s taekwondo team put a successful show at the recently held 1st International Women’s Taekwondo Championship in Kathmandu, Nepal. The women won one silver and four bronze medals at the tournament, which is organised by the Women Empowerment Committee and Nepal Taekwondo Association.

The Indian women’s taekwondo team put a successful show at the recently held 1st International Women’s Taekwondo Championship in Kathmandu, Nepal. The women won one silver and four bronze medals at the tournament, which is organised by the Women Empowerment Committee and Nepal Taekwondo Association.

This is the first time that a women’s taekwondo championship was organised by a national federation and eight countries came together to participate in it. The championship focused at raising awareness around women in sports.

The Taekwondo Federation of India sent an eight-member women’s taekwondo team to participate in the championship.

Shraddha Dixit from UP won the Silver medal in the 49kg category and also the best player award, comprising Rs 51,000. Shivani Thakur, who took part in the 53kg category, won a Bronze. Kritika Thakur also won a Bronze in the 46kg category.

Three of the eight members -- Mukta Gupta, Afreen Hyder and Bazaalla Mushtaq -- were from Jammu & Kashmir. While Gupta won a Bronze medal in the Individual Poomsae Event, Afreen Hyder won a Bronze in the 57kg category and Bazaalla participated in a team event.

The Indian team was led by Atul Pangotra as a Head of Team and Coach. Harish Tokas from Delhi was the other Coach. Pangotra is presently stationed in the J&K State Sports Council as a Taekwondo Coach.

As the women’s team returned to the country, Taekwondo Federation of India President Sh Chetan Anand met the Indian team and congratulated the medal winners and coaches. Secretary General TFI, Prabhat Sharma also congratulated the team. He also praised the success of the J&K Taekwondo Association.

It is crucial to note that Taekwondo Federation of India is the only body affiliated with the Indian Olympic Association.
