Water and food are in low supply, according to the student. "I haven't drank a drop of water since last night", says a student crying in the video. Earlier another video also went viral which shows about 100 students appealing for help getting to Ukraine's western border, where they can travel into neighbouring countries and catch a flight home.

The Russian invasion began in the eastern part of Ukraine. The capital, Kyiv, and the second-largest city, Kharkiv, in the east, have taken the worst of the damage. Thousands of Indian students from these places have successfully crossed into Poland, Hungary, and other neighbouring countries, albeit in tremendous danger and using any kind of transportation they could find.

Indian students at a dormitory in the northeastern city of Sumy were shown in a video collecting snow to melt for water, demonstrating how terrible the situation is in war-torn Ukraine. According to reports, some 800-900 Indian students have been detained in the Medical Institute of Sumy State University's dorms for more than a week and are running out of food and water. And, with Russian soldiers shelling and bombing over the town, they are hoping to be rescued from their perilous predicament soon. Meanwhile, the administration has expressed its concern about Sumy.

Given Sumy's location in Ukraine's northeastern peninsula, students will find it difficult to travel to the western border, from which they can reach neighbouring Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Moldova, given the current situation.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that eastern Ukraine, particularly Kharkiv and Pisochin, is receiving the most attention. We were able to arrange for some buses to arrive. Five buses are already running, with more buses arriving later in the evening.

Last week, the Indian embassy in Kyiv issued a warning about heavy fighting in Kharkiv, Sumy, and Kyiv. According to reports, Sumy's trains and buses have stopped running, the town's roads and bridges have been demolished, and there is widespread street fighting.

Hundreds of Indian college students who have made it to Ukraine's western border have been airlifted in by the federal authorities. It has stated that as many evacuation flights as are required as part of Operation Ganga, adding that flights are the least of the problems.
