Singh pleaded guilty to murder but horrific new details of his crime came to light during sentencing submissions at the Court on Wednesday.

Kaur’s mother, Rashpaul Kaur, revealed that Singh was obsessed with her daughter, and he didn’t seem to let her go even after she turned down his proposal a hundred times. She added that she was "tormented by the thought" of what her daughter must have gone through in her final moments. Further, she said that she would never forgive the accused for what he had done and pleaded with the court that he be jailed for life.

Jasmeen was murdered one month after reporting Singh to the police for stalking.

Here are some shocking revelations from the case

  1. Jasmeen Kaur, a 21-year-old nursing student, was abducted from her workplace on March 5 and driven more than 400 miles while bound with cable ties in the boot of a car Singh had borrowed from his flatmate.
  2. Singh then made “superficial” cuts to Jasmeen’s throat and buried her in a shallow grave. However, an autopsy report revealed they were not the cause of her death and that she had passed away on March 6, 2021.

  3. Prosecutor Carmen Matteo said the murder was “not efficient” and Jasmeen was “made to suffer.” His motive, according to the prosecution, stemmed from his inability to cope with the end of their relationship.

  4. “She had to have been consciously suffering what could only be described as the absolute terror of breathing in and swallowing soil and dying in that way,” Ms Matteo said. Kaur’s family, including her mother, were in court to hear the sentencing submissions

  5. During the court proceedings, Martin Anders, representing Singh, argued that his client's reasoning was severely impaired and that he began experiencing hallucinations after Jasmeen's death.

  6. However, Justice Adam Kimber dismissed these claims, stating that Singh was punishing Jasmeen for rejecting him. As a result, Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment, with the non-parole period to be determined in the coming month.

  7. Singh initially denied murder, saying Jasmeen had committed suicide and that he had buried the body. He took officers to her burial site where they found Jasmeen’s shoes, glasses, and work name badge in a bin, alongside looped cable ties.
