Indian Girls Win At World Chess Championships

This year has been a spectacular one for women in the international sports arena. Now, even girls as young as 12 are winning India medals at world chess championships.

Recently, 15-year-old Aakanksha Hagawane won the under-16 gold medal at the World Youth Chess Championship, held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Aakansha is the daughter of a national-level boxer and is from Pune. Her coach is former national player, Jayant Gokhale. Hers was the only medal for India at the championship.

At the recently concluded World Cadets Championship, Mrudul Dehankar won the under-12 girls' silver medal. The Nagpur-born girl has won the Maharashtra State Championship multiple times and even won a silver at the under-10 age group at the Asian Youth Championships.

Divya Deshmukh was another winner at the Cadet's championship, bringing back a bronze medal, after beating Kaiyu Ning from China.

Let's hope these girls continue to shine and win India many more international medals.
