New Update
Bengaluru Woman Airlifted, Woman Airlifted
Woman airlifted from Portland and brought to Chennai, following her critical heart condition, becomes India's longest aero-medical evaluation. The distance between Portland and Chennai which is 8137 mi( over 13000 km) was covered within 24 hours.

A 67-year-old woman, with a critical heart condition, was reportedly airlifted from Portland, US to Chennai India. A Bengaluru-based ambulance flight service ICATT was used, which landed in Chennai on Tuesday.  This has now surpassed the other evacuations in the past, including the aero-medical transfer from Johannesburg to Chennai also by ICATT, to become the longest aero-medical evacuations to India. The ICATT air ambulance is equipped with an ICU, and reportedly costs around $133,000 (a little over 1 crore).

The woman, whose name still remains undisclosed, was being treated in a tertiary hospital in Portland for her condition for the longest time, but her family decided against continuing the same and opted for a hospital in Chennai for her heart surgery instead. ICATT co-founder Shalini revealed that Chennai has become the preferred treatment destination as it provides the best treatment, especially in the heart, lung, liver and kidney management.

Reports suggest that the woman airlifted was transported in two Challenger 605 aircrafts. First one from Portland to Istanbul, Turkey, and the second from Istanbul to Chennai. The air ambulance flight reportedly was fully equipped with a medical team , including three doctors and two paramedics, taking stops in Iceland and Istanbul for refuelling. The woman's heart condition was reportedly deteriorating, which also started affecting her other organs, causing renal failure and stabilised on dialysis.

ICAAT co-founder, Shalini Nalwad revealed that it is the longest medical transfer that the International Critical-Care Air Transfer Team has undertaken. She also added, "This was going to be a complex ICU management, away from any help at 41,000 feet in most of the journey of 23 hours. The biggest challenge in this operation was that the kidneys were completely dialysis-dependent and this therapy cannot be provided in transit. The transit time that they were facing was 23 hours in total, including 19.5 hours on flight alone"

The family sought treatment from senior interventional cardiologist Dr Sai Satish and his team of doctors, who contacted ICAAT for this medical evacuation by air. The journey began from Portland to Chennai began at 2.30 pm local time there. After brief halts in Iceland's capital Reykjavik for refuelling and in Istanbul to change into yet another jet, the flight reached Chennai at 2 am on July 19 2022.
