A woman’s in-laws forcibly shaved her head and physically assaulted her after she gave birth to her second daughter. The woman, who is from Agra, gave a written complaint to the police, in which she said that her husband and in-laws have been ‘mentally and physically torturing and assaulting me'. "They even shaved my head,” she said.
The victim, who is suffering from anaemia, has fled to her parents. The police detained the woman’s husband, Rashid, and four of his family members.
Sadly, the victim’s family has withdrawn the complaint because they want her to live with her husband and for the two of them to take care of the two children together.
These cases aren’t uncommon -- in India, boys are born at a rate that is 9 per cent higher than that of girls.
A campaign to save the girl child -- Beti bachao, beti padhao -- was launched in January last year. Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik was made its brand ambassador in Haryana, where the gender ratio has reached alarming proportions. According to the 2011 census data, there are 834 879 girls for every 1000 boys in the state, compared to the national average of 919.
