According to the Baylor University Medical Centre in Dallas, the mother had received a womb or uterus transplant post which she gave birth to a baby boy.
The details haven't been revealed about the birth, and when the baby was born as the patient has requested the hospital for privacy for the time being.
“We’ve been preparing for this moment for a very long time,” says Dr Liza Johannesson, an ob-gyn and uterus transplant surgeon at Baylor. “I think everyone had tears in their eyes when the baby came out. I did for sure,” TIME reported.
The birthing of this baby was termed as a ‘milestone’ and ‘a beautiful moment of love and hope for a mother who had been told she would never be able to carry her own child,’ by Giuliano Testa, the principal investigator of the uterine transplant clinical trial at the hospital in a statement, CNN.com reported.
This transplant was carried out as a part of a clinical trial to study new infertility treatment options for women who don't have a functioning uterus.
Last year, the Baylor teams, performed the first living donor uterus transplant in the US in four women. However, the procedure was unsuccessful for the first three patients as due to inadequate blood flow the organs were removed.
A non-functioning uterus in women is an irreversible condition. It can be because the women were born without the organ, has one that no longer functions or lost the uterus. It is known as uterine factor infertility and is known to have affected as many as 5 per cent women worldwide.
Back in 2014, the world’s first baby was born from a transplanted uterus at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. A 36-year-old woman gave birth after receiving a transplant from a 61-year-old unrelated donor.
The Swedish hospital, since then, has had a total of eight babies born to mothers who've received uterine transplants.
