IIT Guwahati rape survivor moves plea: After the IIT Guwahati rape accused was granted bail in the case, the survivor has moved a petition in Guwahati High Court asking for impounding of the accused person's passport.
The woman filed her plea on Wednesday with the sessions court in Kamrup rural district. The court has accepted her plea and has scheduled the hearing for September 1. The court will also have a hearing for framing of charges on the accused on the same day.
Justice Ajit Borthakur of the Guwahati high court had granted bail to the accused on August 13 despite considering the rape case. The judge had said that both the accused and the survivor are "future assets" of the state and are "talented students". The court ruled out all possibilities of the accused tampering with the evidence in the case. The accused was directed against leaving the jurisdiction without permission.
The survivor in her plea argued that if the accused person seeks permission to leave the jurisdiction, she can also do so. She asked the court that if the accused is granted permission then his passport should be taken away by the authorities. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the plea read, "There is every likelihood of the accused thwarting justice by fleeing the borders of this country.”
The survivor pointed out that accused person's parents are financially sound so he might leave the country by jumping bail.
The petitioner was allegedly raped by the accused on March 28 after she was forcibly made to drink alcohol. She was reportedly taken to Guwahati Medical College for treatment. The accused was later suspended by IIT Guwahati. The college in its statement had said, "An unfortunate incident involving a female student was brought to the notice of the institute on March 28, 2021. The institute acted promptly, and the student was rushed to the Institute hospital where she was examined and was advised to go to Guwahati Medical College (GMC) for necessary medical examination"
