IIT Guwahati rape case: The Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati, Assam has reportedly expelled a male student accused of raping his female peer on the campus. This comes following the accused's arrest on April 3 and suspension from college in connection to the case. Reports suggest the institution's senate, which took the call of the man's expulsion, was unanimous in its decision taken in favour of women's safety on the campus.
As reported earlier, 21-year-old Utsav Kadam allegedly raped a fellow student, his junior, on the IIT Guwahati campus in March this year. The woman claimed Kadam took her to a secluded spot and forcefully administered her alcohol, resulting in her falling unconscious. Two hours passed before she was found in that state by other students outside her hostel. More on the case here.
Kadam was arrested a month after the alleged incident took place but a court, in August, released him on bail mentioning in its order that both the complainant and the accused were "future assets" of the state. His detention at that moment in the case was deemed unnecessary and the man was out on a bond of Rs 30,000.
