IIT Bombay Canteen Worker Arrested For Peeping Into Women's Washroom: 10 Things To Know

Following the Chandigarh University MMS leak scandal, another case has been reported from IIT Bombay where a canteen worker was caught and arrested for allegedly peeping into the women's bathroom.

A female student raised the alarm after noticing that someone was recording her through the window slits in one of the bathrooms. The canteen worker’s mobile phone was seized by the authorities and after an interrogation, the accused was arrested by the Powai police.

Recently, Chandigarh University students staged a protest over allegations that a female student had taken around 60 objectionable videos of hostel mates and shared them with others. The police arrested the female students and two men and said the accused woman only took videos of herself and shared them with her boyfriend.

IIT Bombay Canteen Worker Arrested

• A canteen employee at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was arrested for allegedly peeping into the women’s washroom in a hostel building.
• The accused, Pintu Garia, 21, an employee of the hostel’s night canteen allegedly climbed a pipe and peeped into the women’s washroom on Sunday, September 18.
• A female student raised the alarm when she noticed someone recording her through the window in one of the bathrooms in the hostels.
• The accused was caught soon afterwards, his mobile phone was seized, and he was arrested by the Powai police after being interrogated.
• He has been accused of voyeurism and the case against him was lodged under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code.
• Reportedly, no photo or video was found on the cellphone Garia was carrying.
• IIT Bombay released a statement which revealed that based on the initial report, no footage was shared from the phones confiscated from the accused.
• The institute shut down the canteen and will only reopen the canteen if it is staffed by women exclusively.
• The institute added that the gaps in the ducts that may have been used by the accused have been closed to protect the safety of the students.
• IIT Bombay wrote in the statement that they were in discussions with the students to see which additional safety measures could be taken. The institute ended the statement by saying the institute stands with its students and would work toward ensuring the safety and security of the students.
