ICC Raises Women’s World Cup Prize By 10 Times

With the International Cricket Council announcing a 10-time increase in the prize money of the Women’s World Cup 2017, women’s cricket is set to break new ground. The prize money will be $2 million, compared to the 2013 World Cup when it was just $200,000.

“The ICC Women’s World Cup is the pinnacle of the women’s game and as such, the players should be rewarded appropriately. Two million dollars is the first step towards greater parity and recognition. The change will not happen overnight but the women’s game is crucial to the global growth of cricket,” said ICC Chief Executive David Richardson in a statement, as reported by Indian Express.

Promoting Women’s World Cup heavily, ICC also stated that 10 matches of the tournament from June 24 to July 23, which will be held in England, will be telecast live on TV while the others will be live-streamed.

Other facilities used in the Women’s World Cup for the first time are Decision Review System (DRS) and a drone camera. And a Spidercam will be fixed for the finale that will be held at Lord’s on July 23.

“This demonstrates a welcome, long-term commitment to the global growth of the women’s game, and it recognises the opportunity presented by women’s sport,” Cricket Australia Chief Executive James Sutherland said.

He added, “We have seen huge interest in our women cricketers here in Australia through the two seasons of WBBL, and part of the success of this league is that every game is available to fans through live streaming. Cricket Australia is also pleased that the ICC is working towards prize money parity with the men’s game within 15 years.”
