Kangra girl Tanu Kumari has topped the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBOSE) Class 10 examination. When asked what does she want to do in life, without a second thought, the 16-year-old said she aspires to become a doctor, inspired by healthcare workers working tirelessly during this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Tanu topped the exam with 691 marks, making her father Tilak Raj, who is a salesman, and mother who is a housewife proud. Tanu said, “I was inspired by my family members who are doctors and currently serving in the Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Kangra to become a doctor,” The Indian Express reported.
Tanu has been closely following how the healthcare professionals risking their lives to serve the entire world during the coronavirus pandemic. “And now I too am determined to be one,” the topper, who got 98.71 per cent in her class 10 boards, said.

Tanu is a student of the Ishan Public School at Samloti in Kangra. The 16-year-old has left behind 1.04 lakh students to stand out and be at the first rank. Her next goal is to prepare for the medical entrance exam as she already started studying for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
According to a report in Hindustan Times, 23 girls and 10 boys have made it to the top 10 merit list.
She is not your typical student
Tanu studied for six to seven hours daily for her board exams. She thanked her family and teachers for the support and said, “While I used to study on my own, my school and family too played an important role. Whenever I had any doubt, I always had my school teachers available for me, sometimes even on phone after school.”
No to online studies
Unlike most students these days, Tanu claims that she doesn’t like to study online. “I was never comfortable with the idea of studying online as I love to read physical books. I am focusing on science subjects especially Biology, and am using the lockdown period to understand the subject well,” remarked the Kangra girl.
She also does not like the conventional method of studying in coaching institutes but believes in preparing for the medical entrance exam all by herself.
Improving the results from last year, once again girls outshined boys in the Class 10 board examination this year. While a total of 71.5 percent of girls cleared the exam, 64.9 percent of the boys passed the exams, the MoneyControl.com reported.
