The supermoon, named for its large visual appearance, occurs when the moon's orbit is closest to Earth at the time that it is a new or full moon. And though the supermoon is not too rare, it is the first time in six years that it will coincide with a total lunar eclipse. This total lunar eclipse is also the first one since 2019.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth comes between the sun and a full moon in a straight line. With the Earth covering the sunlight's path, the moon appears a dark, reddish shade thereby giving rise to the blood moon phenomenon.
