So India has finally got a women's-only liquor shop. Women can 'finally' buy liquor without any inhibitions. Did someone say breaking a glass (ceiling) is a lucky charm? Here we are then. It is a government-run wine and beer store that promises to give women the comfort of a safer environment to buy alcohol. If you a woman who buys her own booze, you sure would have got the 'looks' standing with your wares at the cashiers. As though alcohol was a male 'domain.'
Women buy everything from vodka, wine to whiskey. They like tequila shots a lot.
The shop is equipped with high-end brands of all kinds of whiskey, wine, champagne and vodka. It is divided into two sections where one is for general public and one entirely for women. The shop-owner Rohit Arora has even employed a female attendant to look after the purchases and assist women in their shopping. “Women buy everything from vodka, wine to whiskey. They like tequila shots a lot. I have only seen well-behaved customers in the shop. Also, women feel really thankful for this section that’s entirely for them. They are really happy,” said the female cashier in a video by the Indian Express.
I, for one, have gone to the mall on several occasions to buy alcohol. In my past experiences, I have faced men staring at me for being so confident in buying exactly what they were buying. And oh, by the way, the mall has over six Wine and Beer shops and its main business comes from these shops. So naturally these shops are always, at all times of the day when they are opened, filled with men looking for their daily fix. And when I used to enter the shop, putting my ever-so-shiny-armour-of-confidence on, I still felt like I was trying to intrude a space that I apparently should not.
This new women-only liquor shop will make buying booze for girls seem legit- both morally and socially.
So when the news of a new women’s only liquor shop crossed me, I was surprised but then overjoyed. People of our country have hardly ever acknowledged the fact that women drink alcohol and enjoy it too. Luckily the numbers are ever-growing. This shop does away with the stigma related to girls who drink alcohol. With the opening of this sector, we have progressed. May be in a small way, but we have. And this marks the beginning of coming to terms with the times we are living in. This new women-only liquor shop will make buying booze for girls seem legit- both morally and socially.
