The 20-year-old man arrested for the brutal rape and murder of a six-year-old Dalit girl in Hoshiarpur was reportedly considered a brother by the girl and her five elder sisters. The girl’s father who is a migrant labourer from Bihar said that his daughters had been tying rakhi to the accused for years, reported Indian Express.
The accused youth, Surpreet and his 80-year-old grandfather Surjit Singh, were arrested by the police when the half-burnt body of the girl was found in a building used by them to keep farming instruments and cattle. The migrant labourer and his daughters knew the accused of years, they used to work at his family’s fields and lived just a kilometre apart.
According to the family of the deceased, the girl was allegedly taken by Surpreet who wanted to buy her biscuits. When the girl didn’t return they went to check but the accused denied knowing about her whereabouts. The family kept searching, then at 5 pm, the grandfather came and told the family that the girl’s body was in their “haveli” and that she had set herself on fire.

Both the accused have been arrested by the police and under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act.

The incident has shocked the entire nation, the CM of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh while expressing his outrage demanded “exemplary” punishment and fast trial for the two accused in the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl. The residents of the village gathered outside the house of the accused and demanded justice for the little girl.
