The suicide of a 17-year-old girl in the Tumakuru district of Karnataka's Chelur area has now been revealed to be an alleged instance of an honour killing. The police detained her father, brother, and uncle on suspicion of murder. The girl had fled her home to tie the knot with a man from a Scheduled Caste group, but her relatives later brought her back.

1. The incident came to light on June 9 when the girl's family, who believed she had committed suicide, hastily cremated her body on their property in the Chikkahedigehalli hamlet of Chelur Hobli.
2. The police first filed a charge for aiding suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code. Later, however, the authorities came to the conclusion that it was murder based on preliminary forensic evidence from the burned body and testimony of family members who were reportedly aware of the murder plot. The girl's mother Sunitha P was identified as an accused, along with her father Parashuramaiah J, 45, brother Shivaraju P, 21, and uncle who were all detained on suspicion of murder.
3. Deputy Superintendent of Police Naveen Kumar of Sira stated that the IPC 306 (abetment of suicide) case has been changed to an IPC 302 murder case because testimony and the investigation points to murder.
4. Head constable Ramesh Poojary learned about the girl's death and hasty burning of her remains on the evening of June 9. He was patrolling around the hamlet at that time. The 17-year-old daughter of a Nayaka community member died after ingesting poison, and the corpse was cremated at the family's agricultural property, according to Poojary's complaint, which was filed at Chikkahedigehalli village.
5. The girl was in love with a young man from a nearby hamlet in the Sira region who belonged to a different caste. The lawsuit stated that even though she persisted on marrying the Dalit lad, her relatives reportedly tried to convince her not to go on with the relationship. The family even carried out her engagement on May 28, according to information provided to the police by the family.
6. According to reports, the wedding was scheduled for three months after she turned 18. However, the girl persisted in getting married to the man of her choice despite her engagement, as per the first police report.
7. However, the police investigation found that the 17-year-old has eloped and was brought back by her family the night before she passed suddenly. She was denied access to the house on return, and the night before she passed away, she spent her night in a cow shelter instead. The fact that she had left the family to be with the boy had angered them. This is the case of honour killing.
