Two Indias controversy: Actor-comedian Vir Das delivered a stage performance at the United States' Kennedy Centre, a video of which premiered online on November 15. The content of his nearly seven-minute piece is centred around India and - as has happened - was inherently bound to inflame passions both for and against him. A massive controversy has erupted following the release of the video, which is now viral, leading to Das facing legal action for his words.
Aditya Jha, a spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has reportedly filed a complaint against Das for supposedly "insulting" the nation before an international audience. "I want Vir Das to be arrested so that no one can malign the nation like this," he said Wednesday.
Das' I Come From Two Indias monologue touches upon social issues from gender violence to communalism, and other topics such as politics, governance, cricket, journalism and sexuality.
On social media, where netizens are sharply divided over his act, Das — Vir Das (@thevirdas) November 16, 2021 a note writing his "video appeals for us to never forget that we are great... It ends in a gigantic patriotic round of applause for a country we all love, believe in and are proud of."
