Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother Heeraben Modi passed away at a hospital in Ahmedabad earlier today, December 30. "A glorious century rests at the feet of God," Modi tweeted on her passing. Heeraben lived with PM Modi's younger brother Pankaj Modi at Raysan village near Gandhinagar.
Heeraben Modi, 100, passed away at around 3:30 am today at the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Ahmedabad, according to a bulletin from the hospital. She was hospitalised on Wednesday after her health deteriorated.
PM Modi who reached Gujarat early morning first paid tribute to her at her Raysan residence and then carried the bier with the mortal remains to the crematorium for the last rites.
Heeraben Modi passes away
Informing about her death, PM Modi posted a heartfelt tweet early this morning, "In Maa, I have always felt that trinity, which contains the journey of an ascetic, the symbol of a selfless Karmayogi and a life committed to values."
He added in another tweet, “When I met her on her 100th birthday, she said one thing - Always remember - Work with intelligence, live life with purity."
Born on June 18, 1923, Heeraben's hometown was Vadnagar in Mehsana, Gujarat. She has five sons - PM Narendra Modi, Pankaj Modi, Soma Modi, Amrit Modi and Prahlad Modi, and one daughter Vasantiben Hasmukhlal Modi.
The Indian prime minister often visited his mother to seek her blessings on important occasions and festivals. In a blog post, Narendra Modi spoke about Heeraben Modi and his relationship with her. He wrote, “In my Mother’s life story, I see the penance, sacrifice, and contribution of India’s matrushakti (mother’s power)”.
"My Mother is as simple as she is extraordinary. Just like all mothers," he added.
Several politicians and ministers have expressed sorrow over her demise on social media.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh tweeted that he was "deeply pained" by the news.
"The death of a mother leaves such a void in one's life that is impossible to fill," he wrote.
M Venkaiah Naidu, former vice-president of India, also expressed his condolences. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also expressed his condolences.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed grief over the demise of PM Modi’s mother Heeraben Modi.
In a tweet, he wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendrabhai Modi's mother Pujya Hiraba. Pujya Hiraba was the epitome of generosity, simplicity, hard work and high values of life. I pray that God rest his soul in peace."
