13 women MLAs being selected in Haryana has been a historic event. Previously most districts in Haryana have been under scrutiny for issues related to violence against women. Now having women represent the state will hopefully ensure a better system for the women residents of Haryana.
The election of two BJP candidates, Madhuri Misal and Medha Kulkarni, who won from Parvati and Kothrud constituencies respectively, will hopefully make a difference too. Times of India in a report states that both Anu Aga and Vandana Chavan are to represent Haryana in the Rajya Sabha. It adds that Shiv Sena's Neelam Gorhe, is an MLC and Misal, who defeated Shiv Sena's Sachin Taware, may be rewarded with a ministry.
No big political party, except BJP, fielded women candidates in the city. Other than winners, seven women candidates were nominated by the big parties in the district. Kulkarni, who announced that women’s safety will be her top agenda, told Times of India, “Violence against women is on the rise. We will make sure that women's voices are heard and their issues and problems are addressed.”
Madhuri Misal added that she would focus on vulnerable groups, which would include senior citizens and women. She said, “We have always been rooting for a safe and women-friendly environment in the city.” Misal added that safe travel for women would be a priority.
