In Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi Woman Dies After Being Thrashed By Husband Over Dowry

Hardoi Woman Dowry Death: A woman reportedly breathed her last after being brutally beaten up by her husband over dowry. A video, which has now gone viral on social media platforms shows the accused being violent against the woman in public view. The deceased woman was a resident of Tundwal village within Sursa police station in Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh. The accused hasn't been arrested yet.

The  woman has been identified as Saraswati.  She is a resident of Tundwal village. As per reports she got married to Manoj, the accused, in 2011. Manoj had demanded a gold chain and a buffalo.

On Sunday, she was allegedly pinned to the ground thrashed by him for not fulfilling his dowry demands. He even reportedly tried to hang her. The neighbours rushed Saraswati to a hospital, where she died during treatment.

The woman's father has filed a police complaint against the accused. The complainant stated says "for the last few weeks, his son-in-law had been demanding a gold chain and a buffalo." The complainant also alleged that the son-in-law had even threatened them with "dire consequences."

The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and the Dowry Prohibition Act, and efforts to arrest the accused have been initiated.

Dowry deaths are not new to this country even after stringent laws for prohibition. In other similar incidents, a 26-year-old woman  from Uttar Pradesh, was shot dead reportedly while clicking a selfie with a gun that belonged to her father-in-law. The incident also occurred in Hardoi. Another 34-year-old woman named Mandeep Kaur allegedly died by suicide due to dowry harassment in Punjab. Kaur succumbed to her burn injuries in Kakowal Majra village in Sahnewal, Ludhiana. The death case has been reported by the father of the deceased who has alleged torture and murder by her in-laws. She was reportedly harassed for dowry and set herself on fire at her house.
