Childhood

Born in Tamil Nadu, Waheeda was a brilliant dancer. She was trained in Bharatnatyam and aspired to become a doctor. However, the sudden demise of her father crushed her dream of becoming a doctor. She, instead, started looking towards films to help her family deal with the financial crisis.

Stint in Tollywood

Waheeda commenced her career with Telugu films like Jayasimha in 1955, Rojulu Marayi in 1955 and Kaalam Mari Pochu in 1956. These films helped her secure a place in the hearts of the masses who desired to see more of her work.

Her Bollywood Journey

Under the wings of Guru Dutt, Waheeda kick-started her Bollywood career with the movie Pyaasa. She went on to act in a series of films after that. Kagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, Guide, Kala Bazaar, Roop ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Ram Aur Shyam, Aadmi, Teesri Kasam and Khamoshi established her as a prolific actress. Her on-screen chemistry with actors like Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna and Dilip Kumar brought thousands of fans to the cinema halls. They used to be in awe of her beauty and elegance. Her stint as the leading lady of Bollywood was a long and memorable one.

After a hiatus of 12 years, Waheeda was back in the film industry. She continued enjoying her work by playing small characters in different movies. She has played elderly roles of mother and grandmother in movies like Om Jai Jagdish, Rang De Basanti, Water and Delhi 6.

Personal Life

She had married her co-star Shashi Rekhi in 1974 and went on to have two children, Sohail and Kashvi. Both of them are well-known writers working in the film industry. The family faced a personal setback when Shashi Rekhi died in 2000 after succumbing to a prolonged  illness.

Philanthropy

Wahida Rehman has been closely working with NGO Pratham which aims at impart education to slum children. She is very passionate about education and travels to different countries to collect funds for the same. She is also associated with an NGO called Rang De that works in the direction of alleviating poverty.
