The gaming industry is not only witnessing a surge in female players but also embracing diversity in narratives. Rockstar's GTA 6 trailer introduces Lucia, the first female protagonist in the franchise's history. Set in Vice City, the trailer portrays Lucia embarking on a journey from prison, engaging in heists reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde. This step towards inclusivity and representation is echoed by Netflix's decision to onboard multiple Rockstar titles, marking a substantial advancement for women in gaming.
To gain deeper insights about the good and the bad for women in gaming, we turn to the experiences of female gamers. Aanchal and Anisha, both passionate about gaming, share their stories and shed light on the challenges and triumphs they face within the gaming community. Aanchal Doshi and Anisha Mukherjee, two avid female gamers, offer glimpses into their gaming journeys.
The Good And The Bad: Voices From Female Gamers
Aanchal's interest ignited during the PUBG era, fueled by the encouragement of her male friends. Intrigued by the gaming world showcased on YouTube, she found herself drawn to the immersive experience it promised. Anisha's initial interest was driven by friends participating in an event, eventually leading her to delve into Twitch streams for a deeper understanding of the gaming landscape.
Both gamers reveal their gaming preferences and the time they dedicate to their passion. Aanchal favoured PC games like Valorant and GTA, allocating 2-3 hours daily to gaming. On the other hand, Anisha leans towards team-based tactical shooters and occasionally indulges in action-adventure story modes.
Misogyny In The Virtual Realm
The virtual battlefield is not without its challenges. Aanchal and Anisha share experiences of encountering hurtful or offensive comments. Aanchal points out the scepticism faced by female gamers, often expected to underperform. Playing anonymously to avoid prejudice, Aanchal occasionally endures name-calling from strangers.
She says, “As girls the players expect us to not play in a better way. They feel we don't know how to play. I generally play anonymous as a guy but if I play bad then they (usually strangers) sometimes call names.”
Anisha, however, faces a more toxic environment, with strangers making inappropriate requests, engaging in misogynistic behaviour, and even abandoning games upon discovering a female teammate. As gaming traditionally attracted a predominantly male audience, the presence of women in this space is sometimes met with resistance from those who perceive gaming as an exclusively male domain. Misguided notions of superiority and a fear of losing dominance contribute to the negative attitudes women face.
Anisha shares, “..a lot of them would leave while queuing up in game just because they heard some girl teammate queuing up with them, they can’t think past the fact that women too can game very well, their typical mindset is that if there’s a woman in their team, they’ll end up losing for sure so they either force us out of the game or just leave themselves to queue up with other teams.”
Exploring The Depths Of Virtual Misogyny
The phenomenon of misogyny against women in gaming is a complex issue rooted in societal norms and ingrained stereotypes. The screen becomes a shield for toxic attitudes, perpetuating a harmful cycle that needs dismantling. Additionally, the anonymity provided by online platforms almost encourages some individuals to express misogynistic sentiments without any sense of accountability.
Anisha shares her experience saying, “Hurtful/ offensive comments from strangers is very common for us women in gaming. Either these men would be asking us out for our snap ids, Instagram accounts, personal numbers or pass misogynistic comments. Their classic “ghar ke kaam nahi hai tujhe” & the use of cuss words is constant. It’s a toxic environment tbh, i never really felt it was a safe space to open my mic and speak for basic game callouts unless i was with my known team.”
Inclusivity And Respect In Gaming Community: Does It Get Better?
Finally, both gamers weigh in on the overall trajectory of the gaming community's inclusivity and respect. Aanchal sees improvement, citing the inclusion of female gamers in prominent gaming clubs like 8bit.
Anisha similarly highlights, “I certainly think that the gaming community is improving with more skilled female players entering Esports competitions and other competitive gaming matches. Women in gaming have started to get recognition and comparatively, i feel like the general women gamers nowadays do not face as such toxic comments from men as we used to before a few years back.”
Shifting Demographics: A Rising Wave Of Female Gamers
The world of online gaming certainly is undergoing a transformative shift, challenging the conventional notion of it being a male-dominated space. The Lumikai Gaming Report, a pan-India survey encompassing 2,317 participants, unveils a groundbreaking statistic—women now constitute an impressive 41% of India's gaming community. With a balanced male-to-female ratio of 60:40, these findings signify a significant departure from the stereotypical image of a gamer, reflecting the growing appeal of gaming to a diverse audience.
In conclusion, the landscape of women in gaming is evolving, with both positive strides and persistent challenges. The industry's recognition of female gamers and the inclusion of diverse narratives signal progress, but the prevalence of toxicity and stereotypes calls for continued efforts to foster inclusivity and respect within the gaming community. The gaming community, while evolving, grapples with the challenge of dismantling deep-seated gender biases. Initiatives aimed at education, awareness, and promoting a culture of respect within gaming circles are crucial in challenging and changing these harmful attitudes.
