The Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has condemned world leaders for their 'empty words' in a video message released ahead of the fifth anniversary of the Paris climate accord on Saturday.
Here are 7 things she conveyed through the video.
- Greta said through the Agreement, the world leaders promised to keep the global average temperature rise to well below 2 degree Celsius and to pursue 1.5 degrees to safeguard future living conditions. She says that a lot has happened since then. But the action needed is still nowhere in sight.
- The gap between what we need to do and what is actually being done is widening by every minute. The world is still speeding in the wrong direction.
- The five years following the Agreement have been the five hottest years ever recorded. During that time the world had emitted more than 200 gigatons of CO2.
- Commitments are made, distant hypothetical targets are set and big speeches are given. Yet when it comes to the immediate action which is needed, there is a state of complete denial as time is wasted creating new loopholes with empty words and creative accounting.
- Thunberg said that reading through the current best available science, one will realize that the climate and ecological crisis cannot be solved without system change. This crisis is only a part of a bigger sustainability crisis.
- According to her, we have been distancing ourselves from nature from too long. We have been mistreating the planet and living as if there was no tomorrow. She said that given the current emission rate, the remaining CO2 budget for 1.5 degrees will be completely gone within 7 years. That will be long before we will have a chance to deliver 2030 and 2050 targets.
- However, she thinks that there is still hope because the people have not yet been made aware. A crisis cannot be solved without treating it as a crisis. Nor can something be treated as a crisis unless we understand the emergency.

As #ParisAgreement turns 5, our leaders present their 'hopeful' distant hypothetical targets, 'net zero' loopholes and empty promises.⁰⁰
But the real hope comes from the people.⁰
