The Swedish teenager, Greta is sailing on a 60ft racing yacht fitted with solar panels and underwater turbines which produce electricity on board.

The teenage climate activist will set sail for New York from Plymouth on Wednesday with the aim of making the trip zero-carbon. “I might feel a bit seasick and it’s not going to be comfortable but that I can live with,” Thunberg told the BBC. “If it’s really hard then I just have to think it’s only for two weeks then I can go back to as usual,” said the 16-year-old. Greta will be accompanied by her father, Svante, and a cameraman on the journey.

“By doing this it also shows how impossible it is today to live sustainable,” Greta said to The New York Times. “That, in order to travel with zero emissions that we have to sail like this across the Atlantic Ocean.”

Talking about the boat, Skipper Boris Hermann, the 38-year-old German captain, said, “Greta taking on this challenge of sailing across on a race boat with zero comfort really shows her commitment to the cause and how far she’s willing to push herself.”

Greta added, “By not flying you not only reduce your own carbon footprint but also that sends a signal to other people around you that the climate crisis is a real thing.”

Greta will arrive and join the UN Climate Action Summit in New York in September and the COP 25 climate change conference in Santiago, Chile in December.

The climate girl grabbed the spotlight when she protested outside the Swedish Parliament urging all the red-collar workers to take effective measures to solve the climate change problem, in 2018.

Recovering from depression

As a child, she was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. In early adolescence she battled severe depression. Talking about recovering it slowly, she said, “I’ve had my fair share of depressions, alienation, anxiety and disorders,” she wrote in a recent Facebook post. “But without my diagnosis, I would never have started school striking. Because then I would have been like everyone else.”

She has already inspired many school kids and teenagers across the globe to take initiative to save this plant.

Greta and her climate change movement

She made headlines when delivered her fiery speech in UN climate change COP24 in Katowice, Poland, last year. “The year 2078, I will celebrate my 75th birthday. If I have children maybe they will spend that day with me. Maybe they will ask me about you. Maybe they will ask why you didn’t do anything while there still was time to act. You say you love your children above all else, and yet you are stealing their future in front of their very eyes,” she said in her UN speech.

Nominated for the Nobel Prize

The 16-year-old has been nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by three Norwegian lawmakers. “They were always talking about how we should turn off lights, save water, not throw out food. I asked why and they explained about climate change. And I thought this was very strange. If humans could really change the climate, everyone would be talking about it and people wouldn’t be talking about anything else. But this wasn’t happening,” she told The New Yorker.
