What do these incidents tell us?
The incident happened days after an artificial intelligence start-up CEO Suchana Seth killed her 4-year-old son in Goa and travelled with his body, packed in a suitcase, to Bengaluru. Investigation into the case revealed that Seth was disturbed because of the child's custody battle with her divorced husband. Reportedly, she pre-planned the murder using cough syrups and a pillow. Later, she tried to kill herself too by slitting her wrist. However, she was arrested at Chitradurga and was charged under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 302 for murder and 201 for the destruction of evidence, alongside provisions of the Goa Children's Act.
Suicide is a tragic end to a long-suffering. It's not a symbol of selfishness, weakness or ignorance. It is a death caused by an illness- mental health illness. It affects the sufferer as much as it affects the people who love them. You cannot tell a suicidal person that they must stay alive because their death might affect their loved ones. This will only worsen their situation because they will be caught between the struggle to live and the struggle to die. They will neither find peace in death nor in life.
A suicidal person should be encouraged to find reasons to love themselves and to desire life. They should be talked out of their suicidal ideations by making them see beyond their pain. Often, a person with suicidal ideation becomes blind to joy and excitement in life because of the huge wall of trauma, pain, and loss. So loved ones play a vital role in helping people with mental health illnesses break that wall and see the beauty yet to unravel in life. They have to address their pain, help them overcome the loss and trauma and make them overwhelmed by love and support.
Mental health experts have warned families about noticing initial signs of suicidal ideation in their loved ones. They have suggested noticing behavioural changes and engaging in open conversations with troubled loved ones to prevent suicide as early as possible.
