Artificial Intelligence is gradually taking over almost every field of work in the modern world. From technical work to creative production, AI is extensively used to produce innovative results in fields like music. Citing the use of AI in music production, the Recording Academy recently released new guidelines for its awards and nominations.
The Recording Academy is gearing up for the 66th Grammy Awards that will be held in 2024. The academy has released some new guidelines for nominations this year as well as introduced some new categories. One of the important decisions made by the academy is to exclude albums and songs created entirely by AI from nominations. It declared that work that is made by AI without any human contribution or authorship will not be eligible for nominations in any category.
The decision came not long after the production of the last Beatles album was announced by Paul McCartney on June 13. The album will be composed by AI using the voice of John Lennon extracted from an old Beatles demo. The academy noted that while works containing elements of AI will be eligible for nominations, any work that does not include any meaningful contribution from a human creator to lyrics or music will not be eligible.

The academy also announced changes to the eligibility criteria for other Grammy awards as well. New guidelines have made it necessary for the music creator to account for a minimum of 20% of the entire work to be nominated for the Album of the Year category. This will include all songwriters, mixers, engineers, credited and featured artists, mastering engineers, and producers who have worked on the album.
Till 2021, anyone who worked on the album was eligible for nomination. The academy also reduced the nominations for best new artists, song, album, and record of the Year awards from ten to eight.
Three new categories were introduced for Grammy 2024 that are best alternative jazz album, best African music performance, and best pop dance recording. To be nominated for best music film, the movie should have 50% work to be performance-based. Long feature films and biopics will not be eligible but visual albums which are a compilation of music videos to make a single film will be eligible.
The best-improvised jazz solo award was renamed to best jazz performance. The best regional Mexican album will now be called Musica Mexicana album and to be eligible in this category, a major part of musical content must contain elements of traditional Mexican music style and have 50% Spanish lyrics.
