Kerala Girl Develops AI-Based Application To Detect Eye Disease 

Leena Rafeeq, an 11-year-old girl from Kerala has developed an artificial intelligence-based application to detect eye disease and other conditions related to eyes using a unique method of scanning with just an iPhone.

The application is named Ogler EyeScan by the super-talented Leena Rafeeq. The 11-year-old took to LinkedIn and explained very effectively how the application works, with the help of a demonstration video.

Rafeeq explained that the application she created can analyse various parameters like the colour as well as light intensity, and look-up points in order to locate the eyes within the range of the frame with the use of an advanced computer vision and machine learning program, it can also identify if the eyes are nicely positioned in the frame as well as any burst of light issues.

After being successfully done the scan, a few trained models are used to identify any potential eye disorder or other conditions like Melanoma, Pterygium, Arcus, and Cataracts. According to Rafeeq, the application was created natively with SwiftUI without the use of any third-party packages or libraries, it took her about 6 months to research, develop and bring this rather innovative application to life.

She added that she learned more about computer vision, eye conditions, algorithms, machine learning models, and advanced sequence of Apple iOS development which includes, CreateML, sensors data, AR, CoreML, etc. She also informed me that the application is only for iOS 16+ and for iPhone 10 and above.

Rafeeq also claimed that her application is currently under the review process in the App Store and she hopes that it will be listed in it soon. Many people who used the application to detect eye disease got impressed with her innovation and congratulated her for it at such a young age.
