A seven-year-old girl died after a Chinese Manjha (Kite string) wrapped around her neck and caused a deep cut in her throat. The tragic incident occurred in Delhi's Paschim Vihar neighbourhood on Wednesday when the girl was travelling on a bike with her family.
The fatal incident happened on Wednesday evening when the family was travelling on a bike to a swimming class. The seven-year-old was seated in the front, while her father drove the bike and her mother and sister were seated behind. The girl was immediately rushed to the Sri Balaji Action Hospital after the string cut her throat.
Police received a call at 7:30 pm from the hospital that reported the incident. They said that the string was hanging by an electric pole which was later removed by the cops. The case has been registered under charges of causing death by negligence and disobedience of public order.
Chinese Manjha was banned in 2017
Chinese Manjha is a glass-coated synthetic thread. This string thread has been banned in Delhi since 2017. Due to its glass coating, the string is not only harmful to humans but also to birds, animals and nature. The National Green Tribunal also banned Chinese Manjha in 2017 as it caused many tragic incidents. It forbids the manufacture, storage, supply, importation, sale, and use of this Manjha to protect humans, birds, and other animals, as well as the environment.
Seven Kite Flyers Arrested after the Incident
The police from Paschim Vihar West detained seven professional kite flyers under section 94/97 of the Delhi Police Act for flying kites that posed a threat, and the possibility of injury, after the seven-year-old lost her life.
Delhi Police also took to Twitter requesting the public to inform them if anyone they know is selling or producing Chines Manjha. The Twitter post wrote “Is Chinese Manjha being sold, manufactured or used near you? Let’s stop it together. Inform us on 112 and cooperate with us. Your identity will be kept confidential.”
